Back to Back Theatre Democratic Set Residency at Awakenings Fest. Oct 2010

The Awakenings Festival has received a prestigious Australia Council for the Arts Community Partnerships Committee grant to host Back to Back Theatre’s residency in Horsham for the Awakenings Festival 2010 in October.

“Back to Back create innovative and stimulating performance and it is great to see this cutting edge work coming to the Wimmera,” said Festival Director Jacinda O’Sullivan. “The Democratic Set was first presented at Castlemaine State Festival and received rave reviews. It is a residency model that mixes pre-recorded scenes with live performance.”

The Geelong-based professional company is driven by a unique ensemble of seven actors perceived to have intellectual disabilities who create new and challenging theatre, giving voice to social and political issues that speak to all people.

As part of the Awakenings Festival 2010 Back to Back will work with performers in the Wimmera both with and without disabilities including the UBH Players, performing artists with disabilities from the University of Ballarat, Thieves Theatre resident ensemble at the Wesley PAC and people from all over Australia who come to participate in the Awakenings Festival.

This year’s grant will facilitate Awakenings to address multiple barriers to participation in the arts for local and visiting communities to access high quality contemporary art practice. Frank Panucci, Director of Community Partnerships at the Australia Council for the Arts said, "This grant is for Australian artists and communities to engage, collaborate and produce excellent art and cultural development outcomes. This decision was made by a panel of expert peers from across the country who considered that this project will have lasting impacts for both the communities and artists involved."
