In 2009 The Awakenings Festival is choosing to run a 5 day festival wrapped in a month long program of arts, professional development and community events.
Awakenings is thrilled to announce a unique event with The Choir of Hope and Inspiration making their first regional performance at the Awakenings Festival 2009. The Choir of Hope and Inspiration features members of the ARIA award winning Choir of Hard Knocks who rose to fame via the 2007 ABC documentary.

The Awakenings Festival 2009 will again showcase international talent with rock band Popcorn coming all the way from Denmark. The band formed in 1989 and currently has a line-up of four members all of whom have mental health issues and a wealth of musical ability between them on vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards and drums.

The Awakenings Festival WON the Kleenheat Gas Community Event of the Year Regional Development Award. Premier John Brumby was the first to congratulate the Awakenings team at the Opening of the ArtSplash Exhibition. This is a great achievement for the town of Horsham and all the volunteers that ensure the success of the event.
The Regional Development Awards Launch for 2009 is to be held on 12th May at Horsham Rural City Council. Festival Director Jacinda O’Sullivan will be guest speaker.

We held our annual professional development Weekend ‘First Step’ 28th – 30th Ma, 2009 at the Grampians Wildlife Retreat in Dunkeld. The weekend had two performance art groups facilitating workshops, ‘Born in a Taxi’, Melbourne based improvisation group leading the world in workshops involving movement and dance and ‘Way out West’ a disability focused arts group breaking down the barriers of disability.
